Matt

I build software. I'm also building a car.

Most of what I know about software came from building things people actually have to use at work. Most of what I know about cars came from a C63 that is never quite finished.

What I like building is software that replaces a mess: spreadsheets, sticky notes, the same data typed into three places. Motorvar is the biggest one so far.

Motorvar is a workspace for independent used-car lots where one vehicle record carries everything: what the car cost to acquire, what recon still owes it, the public listing, the buyer leads attached to it, the deal documents, and the gross when it finally sells. The problem it fixes is boring and expensive. Most small lots run an inventory tool, a CRM and an accounting system that don't talk to each other, so the same car gets entered three times and the numbers quietly stop agreeing. I'm also building a first online storefront for an independent eyewear retailer, which is a smaller version of the same problem.

Outside of software there's the car, a 2019 C63, currently stage 2. What I like about a build is that it has a forced order. You can't hang bigger turbos on it until the fueling and the cooling can keep up, so every upgrade tells you exactly what the next one has to be. Finding the bottleneck, fixing it, and discovering the bottleneck moved somewhere else is most of what software is too.

The C63

2019 Mercedes-AMG C63, M177 4.0L twin-turbo V8

  1. Intake

    Air in
    • BlackBoost intakes, on the car
  2. Turbos

    Boost
    • Turbosmart diverter valve, on the car
    • Pure 1000 turbos, going on next
  3. Charge cooling

    Cool the charge
    • Modalwork performance intercooler, going on next
    • Two Modalwork auxiliary radiators, going on next
  4. Fuel

    Feeds the engine
    • Modalwork upgraded dual low-pressure fuel pumps, on the car
    • Upgraded high-pressure fuel pump, going on next
    • Ethanol content sensor, going on next
  5. Engine

    M1774.0L twin-turbo V8
  6. Exhaust

    Air out
    • Catted downpipes, on the car
    • Titanium exhaust, on the car
Stage 3 is a system, not a part. The Pure 1000s only pay off once the cooling and the fuel can keep up with them.

Body and cabin

  • Satin black wrap
  • Carbon side skirts and spoiler
  • Interior ambient lighting
  • On the car
  • Going on next
  • Air path, in order
